German Expressionist painter and printmaker, when conscripted into the German army during World War I Marc painted camouflage tarpaulin in artistic styles to increase their effectiveness. The German government identified notable artists including Franz Marc to be withdrawn from combat but before the orders for reassignment could reach him he was struck dead by a shell splinter, aged 36 years.
