Thai Craft Warehouse is a family business operating out of Phrao city, 100kms north of Chiang Mai city, the regional capital of
Northern Thailand. Chiang Mai has always been a crossroads of trade between South East Asia, China, and the silk
routes across India to the West, the culture is warm and welcoming, and the love of arts and crafts is
universal.
At the start of 2005 Thai Craft Warehouse was begun with the vision of delivering the markets of Chiang Mai to
the world. The variety of crafts and clothing in the area is unlimited and the low prices are legendary, it
has been our goal to offer this supply at reasonable prices to the world, to do this we have focused
on efficient data management and keeping overheads low. We attempt to follow the
Asian pricing philosophy of low margin and high volume, and do not look for quick profit. Our catalogs wide range
is one of our strengths, we never rest in the pursuit of new items from diverse producers.
The craftspeople we work with are as varied as the products we offer, from small family and village based groups
and individuals making unique items, to creative fashion workshops in Bangkok and artists in remote hill tribes.
For Thai craftspeople the opportunity to sell through channels such as Thai Craft Warehouse allows them the
opportunity to work close to home in comfortable and natural surroundings and still achieve fair wages. Many of the
seamstresses working on our clothing are mothers or grandmothers, working in this manner means they do not have to
leave their homes to find work in the large factories supplying mainstream fashion. For hill tribe
artisans, a marginalized people within Thailand, sales of their handiwork opens a path to self-sufficiency and
keeps alive their ethnic traditions.
In Thai language we are known as Raan Pah Muang, which can be loosely translated to Traditional Clothing Store,
owned and operated by Kanlayanee Mason (nickname Nine), a graduate of Applied Statistics from
Chiang Mai Rajabhat University, assisting Nine is her husband Sven, a New Zealander with
computer programming experience, and Nines parents Paa Mee and Mere Sawn. We are also lucky to have
two local girls helping us, Nueng and Nines cousin Nat, and international assistance from
Sven's USA based brother Kahn.
