Artwork: Letter and Sketch
This artwork shows a sketch by Gauguin and the contents of one of the letters frequently sent between Paul Gauguin and his friend Vincent van Gogh. It was after a falling out with Gauguin that van Gogh cut off part of his left ear.
Artist: Paul Gauguin
French Post-Impressionist painter born to a French journalist father and half-Peruvian mother. Gauguin's life was often destitute as he searched for a tropical paradise where he could 'live on fish and fruit', he spurned the 'artificial and conventional' society in France and much of his life was spent in South America and Polynesia, his artwork becoming progressively primitive in style.
